The Commissioning Course is the first stage of officer training and education. Its main purpose is to develop an officer with the generic leadership qualities to lead soldiers both on and off operations.

Its mission is, through military training and education, to develop leadership in cadets by expanding their character, intellect and professional competences to a level demanded of an Army Officer on first appointment.

The desired endstate, is an Officer with the leadership qualities to lead soldiers on and off operations.

The overall intent is to foster the attributes of intellect and character, which combined with development of professional competence, equip the officer for the responsibilities of leadership on first appointment.

Component Intents

  • Intellect - To develop intellect by embedding knowledge, wisdom, political and military understanding.
  • Character - To develop the leadership characteristic and qualities required of an officer and an understanding of the core values of the Army.
  • Professional Competence - To achieve professional competence in basic military skills and tactics and the application of command tools.

Core Objectives

To fulfil its mission the Academy has six core objectives.

  • To develop commanders of courage and willpower, with the temperament for decisive action in difficult and dangerous circumstances.
  • To foster attitudes to integrity, selflessness and loyalty which set the soldier apart from others.
  • To teach cadets how to think and communicate as commanders and to foster a deep interest and care for the individual.
  • To achieve a grounding in British Military Doctrine and its significance in all forms of conflict.
  • To encourage the analysis of strategic and war studies as a foundation to military thought and wisdom.
  • To train cadets in the basic skills and battlefield disciplines of soldiering.

The core objectives are not in any order of importance but reflect the three key elements in the training and education of the young officers: the moral, the intellectual and the physical.

  • monitoring and increasing the usage of Owen Mumford products to maximise the potential of each customer
  • to constantly seek out and develop new business within the territory
